Finding, flirting and falling in love with your career—doesn’t it sound fabulous? Let me tell you, it feels even better.
When my friend and colleague, Chanel Caraway, invited me onto her online platform, I immediately said yes. How could I not? The name of her series is Professional Seduction. I’d never thought about managing my career the same way I approached my love life. Kind of silly, don’t you think, considering most of us spend about 47 hours a week working. We better love our careers, because we’re pretty much married to them.
Before settling into the perfect job some of us play the professional field. This is happening now, more than ever. Yep, I’m referencing The Great Resignation, or what NPR calls The Great Renegotiation. We’re living in a time when about 33 million Americans are rethinking and reprioritizing what matters most to them. Similar to the old adage of tall, dark, and handsome, our nation’s workforce is pointing out what really attracts job seekers to a new position—remote work, vacation time, treatment and better pay.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds the average American worker changes jobs about 12 times during her, his or their career. There’s nothing wrong with swiping left until you find the job and perks that are right for you. To this day, I always offer one big piece of advice to friends and colleagues—whether it’s your love life or work-life—you have to sacrifice the like to get the love.
